Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema (1917–2007) was born in the Dutch East Indies and studied law at Leiden University, where he published his first books. When World War II broke out, he joined the Resistance, escaped to England in 1941, and served as a secret agent and Royal Air Force pilot. For his bravery—72 missions—he was knighted by Queen Wilhelmina and received both Dutch and British Distinguished Flying Crosses.
After the war, he became Aide De Camp to Queen Wilhelmina, then later moved to the United States, working in Hollywood and rising to vice-president at NBC in New York. During the Cold War he served as Director of Radio Free Europe. In Hawaii, he returned to writing, producing the international bestseller Soldier of Orange. The story inspired a successful film and, later, the record-breaking Dutch musical that premiered in 2010.
Erik passed away in 2007 at home in Hawaii, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of courage, creativity, and service.
